Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746)
Horse Restrained by a Groom, 1745
Carrara marble
Paris, Louvre Museum, Department of Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern Sculpture.
This horse, held back by a groom and inspired by classical art, illustrates man’s mastery over the animal. The horse, tense, strains its muscles whilst the groom struggles to restrain it. The contrast between the animal’s fiery spirit and human restraint creates a remarkable expressive tension. Through its anatomical precision and sense of movement, the work bears witness to the excellence of classical sculpture.
Manufacture
The embroidery designs for our brooches are exclusively imagined and created by the M&L designers. Each piece is entirely hand-embroidered using **cannetille** wire, following a centuries-old Indo-Pakistani embroidery technique. That is why, in 2009, we recruited our artisans in Pakistan, where we established our own embroidery workshop.
